Making Reading Instruction Meaningful for ELs in Grades 9-12
We all know that emergent literacy best takes place in students’ first language. In this workshop we will focus on how we can best support High School ELs in their quest to become readers in their second language.
- Explore how to support students’ first language literacy even when you don’t speak it and materials aren’t available;
- Considering many High School English Learners are either long-term ELs or relative newcomers, examine best practices for supporting L2 literacy development for those grades;
- Investigate ways to support English Learners when the grade-level content is more complex and abstract;
- Incorporate all 4 language domains into literacy instruction;
- Make plans to take new learning back to school/district;
TARGET AUDIENCE: 9-12 teachers, coaches, and administrators
NOTE: This virtual workshop will include both a live webinar and a self-paced learning module. The live webinar will last approximately 2 hours. During the webinar you will receive access to an asynchronous learning module to be completed within two weeks. After the IRC receives your completed module, 2 weeks later you will receive an email with a link to the evaluation. Upon completion of the evaluation, you will receive an email with a link to your Evidence of Completion form.
