Defining and Refining Our Language and Culture Lenses

If we bring deliberate attention to the role of language and culture in schools, we can build our knowledge and confidence around practices that serve students who are classified as English learners and all students in our multilingual communities. Bringing language and culture into focus as we examine our curriculum and instruction can help us keep students centered and deepen their learning.

Together we will:

  • Identify the experiences that have shaped our own understandings of language and culture and reflect on the relationships these have with teaching and learning
  • Explore concepts, resources, and strategies that can deepen and enhance our understandings of language, language development, instruction for language learners, culture, and serving multilingual communities
  • Employ these lenses to examine some common practices in schools and consider how these lenses might be a useful tool to examine practice in our own schooling contexts
