TBE-Spanish: Compliance, Quality y Calidad!  

The goals of the session include the following:

  1. Examine the essential components that define a Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) program–English language development, Content in English, History and Culture of US and Home Country, Content in Spanish, Spanish language development
  2. Explore pedagogies and practices to strengthen each of these components
  3. Consider what kinds of structures, climate and culture will create fertile ground for growing robust TBE programming

We will particularly concentrate on what is often one of the biggest challenges–turning up the volume of the home language in instruction–focusing in this session on what this can look like in Spanish-English TBE programs. We will explore: Translanguaging, cross-language connections, scaffolding strategies that integrate content and language. Additionally, we will discuss stories of practice and share resources to help build strong, high-quality TBE programming.
