Teaching Approaches to Develop Biliterate Reading: Strategies to Develop Cross-Language Connections & The Interactive Read Aloud
Teachers will explore a variety of research-based strategies to support literacy-based English Language Development in a dual language English-Spanish classroom setting, a transitional bilingual classroom or other language resource model. Some of the literacy based strategies include making cross-language connections (Metalanguage) and Interactive Read Aloud. This seminar is one of a series of workshops aimed at developing biliteracy. The goals of this series are to develop an awareness of what research says about the importance of metalanguage, literacy-based ELD and identify teaching approaches that develop biliterate reading. The series will target the English-Spanish dual language classroom setting, but the strategies can be administered across program models that support culturally and linguistically diverse students. Escamilla et all (2014) Biliteracy from the Start: Literacy Squared will be among the primary tools leveraged in this series as well other.
