The Bilingual Writer’s Toolkit: Syllables, Verbs, and Custom Readers

This workshop provides a practical roadmap for teaching reading and writing in Spanish through a biliteracy lens. Participants will leave with ideas for teaching primary Spanish literacy using the “3 S’s”:

  1. Sílabas: Move beyond ma-me-mi-mo-mu and apply phonetic knowledge to multi-syllabic words across languages.
  2. Selección de verbos: Learn to curate “high-utility” verbs that kickstart beginning writing, allowing students to master basic conjugation while building functional, expressive sentences.
  3. Sus propios lectores: We will explore how to leverage students’ background knowledge and translanguaging to create custom readers that build student confidence in reading.

Target Audience: Primary Spanish Bilingual Teachers (K-2), Instructional Coaches, Administrators, Bilingual Program Directors
