The Center: Resources for Teaching and Learning and the Illinois Resource Center are proud to announce that our own Silvia V. Rogel, Director of Strategic Partnerships and External Affairs for the Center, has been named to the Illinois State Board of Education’s new State Education Equity Committee. As organizations committed to a future where every student’s culture and language are valued and affirmed in Illinois schools, we are excited that this committee is adding such a dedicated champion of equitable and just education as Silvia to this important group. A year ago, Covid-19 changed our lives.

2021-04-21T09:56:39-05:00

A year ago, Covid-19 changed our lives. Just about everything was done remotely from home. It was surreal. Remote teaching and learning has not been kind to many students, parents, and of course, teachers and administrators. The field of education, from early childhood to adult education, was hit hard by the pandemic, and it was transformed by it, too. In fact, many aspects of our lives have been transformed by it, whether we want to admit it or not. Forbes reports that as of late 2020, 70% of US workers did their jobs from home, potentially putting in place the permanent [...]

I Already Miss #MultilingualIL

2021-12-16T12:03:57-06:00

by Olivia Mulcahy   Every bilingual or ESL teacher I know in Illinois looks forward to the winter. Or at least, we all look forward to one special week in early December when it’s usually time to head to Oak Brook for the bilingual conference (as it’s been popularly called), or The Annual Statewide Conference For Teachers Serving Linguistically And Culturally Diverse Students (as it was actually called), or Multilingual Illinois (as it was renamed last year).  This chilly week is the one time a year we get to feel the full warmth of our huge community--to enjoy the embrace of [...]

2020 CENSUS: MAKE EVERYONE COUNT

2020-07-22T10:14:11-05:00

The 2020 Census self-response deadline has been extended to Oct. 31 due to the COVID-19 pandemic; starting Aug. 11, Census Bureau enumerators will be deployed in the field to conduct in-person interviews with those households that have not yet responded. Prior to August, we're encouraging everyone to either: 1) visit the 2020 U.S. Census website to fill out their questionnaire online; 2) call the toll-free number at (844) 330-2020 (English) or (844) 468-2020 (Spanish) to speak with a live operator; or 3) mail in their completed paper copy of the 2020 Census. ISBE’s Census website has toolkits and resources to help you reach your community.  [...]

In Memoriam – Zoila Garcia

2020-06-10T13:11:29-05:00

The Illinois Resource Center is saddened to hear of the passing of long-time IRC supporter, Zoila Garcia. Our deepest sympathies go out to her family. Zoila Garcia, a passionate proponent of dual education, passed away June 7, 2020.  Ms. Garcia had been principal at Whittier Elementary School in Chicago and, previous to that assignment, had been a long time educator at Inter-American Magnet School.  In those roles, she touched the lives of countless students and families, particularly honoring their languages and cultures.  Zoila will be sorely missed. Donations in memory of Zoila Garcia can be made through PayPal/credit card or via check payable [...]

New to Teaching English Learners? Start here!

2020-06-05T07:09:16-05:00

by Maggie Essig This blog entry was originally published by Maggie Essig on her blog, maggieessig.com/blog. Lately I've been seeing posts on social media from teachers looking for resources for teaching English learners. Some are new teachers, who've just been hired as an EL teacher (I've been there...it's overwhelming but you'll figure it out). Some are veteran teachers who will be teaching ELs for the first time. No matter the situation, seeing this question prompted me to start collecting the resources I would have wanted when I started teaching ELs. I have a longer post in the works for the new EL [...]
